Both at the United States Air Force Academy and Northwestern University, I have been honored for my work in the classroom, receiving formal awards as well as invitations to join the faculty of an interdisciplinary humanities program and to participate in university outreach events.

Nominee, Colorado Professor of the Year, United States Air Force Academy (2014): nominated by the Department of English and Fine Arts for this statewide honor

Outstanding Academy Educator, United States Air Force Academy (2014): awarded annually to twenty-four of the Academy’s nearly six hundred instructors

Outstanding Instructor Award, Introduction to Literature Course, Department of English and Fine Arts, United States Air Force Academy (2013): awarded to one instructor of the core literature course taken each year by approximately one thousand students

Teaching Excellence Award, Department of English, Northwestern University (2010): awarded annually to an instructor in the English Department for a course of his/her own design

Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, Department of English, Northwestern University (2008): granted annually to one teaching assistant in the English Department

Instructor, Kaplan Humanities Scholars Program, Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, Northwestern University (2010-2011): selected from across the humanities to teach in this highly competitive selective-enrollment program for Northwestern freshmen

Seminar Leader, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences “Immerse Yourself” Outreach Program, Northwestern University (May 2010, May 2011): selected to teach a session from my freshman seminar, “Slavery and Freedom, Past and Present,” as part of a program that brings high school juniors from Chicago schools to Northwestern’s campus to experience college life
